Radar Modules in Bird-Repelling Applications
Radar-based bird repelling has existed for more than 80 years. Whether among rippling wheat fields, on high-voltage power towers, or beside airport runways, birds have long posed persistent hazards. Crops are pecked and damaged, power facilities suffer failures, and aircraft takeoff and landing face threats—these problems reflect the long-standing limitations of traditional bird-repelling solutions.
Among the many clients of Waytronic, one company specializes in the R&D and manufacturing of bird-repelling devices. As demand for more precise bird control grows, they turned their focus toward a key technology: microwave radar sensing. What advantages and features make this technology favored by leading industry players?

The Dual Dilemma of Traditional Bird-Repelling
Bird-repelling appears simple, but challenges exist in every aspect. For this company, application scenarios across agriculture, power systems, and airports revealed the core pain points of traditional bird-repelling methods.
Dilemma 1: Insufficient Detection Range
Farmland can span dozens of acres, and power lines stretch for kilometers, while traditional bird-repelling devices typically detect only within several to a dozen meters, leaving large monitoring blind spots. Birds often approach the protected zone before the device is triggered, weakening the repelling effect and causing high false-alarm rates. Frequent false alarms increase maintenance costs and may trigger a “wolf-crying” effect, where real threats are ignored.
Dilemma 2: Poor Environmental Adaptability
Outdoor environments change drastically. Temperature, humidity, airflow, and dust can all impact traditional sensors. A device that works well in spring may fail under heavy summer rain.
How can sparrow- or magpie-sized targets be accurately detected at over 30 meters? How can the false-alarm rate be kept below 5%? How can stable operation be maintained under harsh conditions?
These became technical hurdles that bird-repelling products must overcome.

One Chip Builds a 30-Meter “Protection Zone”
The solution is the Waytronic WT41 series human-interaction sensing module. This fully-integrated sensor combines microwave circuits, intermediate-frequency amplification, signal processing circuits, and a powerful MCU into a single chip, paired with a compact planar antenna to ensure performance while significantly reducing size.

The most outstanding advantage of the WT41 series lies in its detection capability. It supports forward detection from 1 to 30 meters, with a 90-degree horizontal field of view and 45-degree vertical field of view, forming a fan-shaped “protection zone” for bird-repelling devices.
When sparrow-sized birds move within 30 meters, the sensor accurately identifies the target and triggers the bird-repelling device via GPIO output. Compared with traditional solutions, this provides a longer reaction window and a significantly wider protection range.

Technological improvements extend beyond distance. The WT41 series integrates multiple digital filtering algorithms within the MCU, offering high recognition accuracy and stable operation from -20°C to 85°C. Its flexibility is a key advantage—via a standard UART interface, detection distance and frequency can be adjusted in real time to suit different application environments. For farmland, the detection range may be set to maximum for wide coverage; for airports requiring precise control, the range can be narrowed for accuracy.
The 5V power design fits power systems of bird-repelling devices perfectly, and the compact 20mm × 20mm × 1.6mm size leaves ample space for miniaturized product designs.
From Passive Response to Active Defense
With the WT41 series human-interaction sensing module, bird-repelling devices transition from passive reaction to active defense.

In Agriculture
Large farmland finally gains a reliable “guardian.” A 30-meter detection distance paired with a 90-degree horizontal field greatly expands the protection coverage of a single device. When bird flocks are still far away, the device has already detected and triggered deterrence, redirecting birds before entering crop zones.
In the Power Industry
Along high-voltage transmission lines, devices can detect nesting or perching behavior accurately.
The sensor’s penetration ability allows detection through acrylic, glass, and thin non-metal shells, ensuring stable performance even with protective housings. Lower false-alarm rates reduce the need for frequent inspections, dramatically cutting maintenance costs.
In Airports and High-Security Scenarios
The reliability of bird-repelling systems directly affects flight safety. With a false-alarm rate below 5% and stable 24/7 performance, the WT41 series is trusted by airport authorities. It supports CW and FMCW mode switching—FMCW offers high sensitivity and distance sensing to capture subtle bird movements, eliminating risks at early stages.

Small Sensor, Big Future
A great sensor doesn’t just improve a product—it can redefine an industry. With the adoption of the WT41 human-interaction radar sensing module, the client’s bird-repelling devices broke through limitations in range, false-alarm control, and environmental endurance, opening new possibilities for the intelligent bird-repelling sector.
From sparrows to magpies, from farmland to airports, from single-scene usage to multi-scenario deployment, sensing technology is breathing new life into the bird-repelling industry. All of this began with precise technological choice and deep understanding of customer needs.
When birds leap from 30 meters away, when algorithms accurately identify targets, and when the device activates at the optimal moment—this is technology creating real value, and innovation transforming an industry.
