Recording Chips Selection Guide: WT2000P as an ISD Alternative

Background:

In today’s society, intelligent voice products have gradually become an integral part of people’s daily lives, progressively replacing many traditional “mute products.” The reason intelligent voice products can produce sound is mainly due to the integration of voice chips.

The main characteristics of voice chips include low power consumption, strong anti-interference capability, minimal external components, simple control, long voice storage time, and no data loss when powered off. Some chips also support repeated erasing and rewriting of voice content. Devices such as automotive reversing radars, bus stop announcement systems, bank queue machines, voice toys, security systems, and home appliances are all equipped with voice chips. Naturally, voice content can be either pre-recorded voice files or recorded audio files, which has led to the emergence of a new product category: recording chips.

However, whether recording chips or voice playback chips, there are many types on the market with varying functions. As a result, many engineers find it difficult to make the right selection. Below, we will discuss how to choose between voice chips and recording chips, and also explain how to select alternatives to the expensive ISD voice solutions.

Selection of Recording Chips:

From a functional perspective, voice chips can generally be divided into recording voice chips and playback-only voice chips. When designing a product that uses a voice chip, the first consideration is whether on-site voice recording is required. If voice recording is needed, a voice chip with recording functionality should be selected; otherwise, a playback-only voice chip can be used.

Typically, voice chips with recording functionality also support voice playback. However, their playback sound quality is usually inferior to that of dedicated playback voice chips. Therefore, when selecting a voice chip, it is necessary to balance functional requirements with audio quality considerations.

Products such as security systems, conference recording systems, and recording toys all require recording capabilities. The development of such products involves the use of recording voice chips. Currently, common recording chip solutions on the market include ISD1110, ISD1400, ISD1700, ISD1800, ISD2500, ISD3300, and ISD4000 series recording chips.

WT2000P is a recording chip produced by Waytronic, specifically designed for embedded audio applications. The chip adopts an ESOP8 package, featuring a compact size that facilitates integration into various small electronic devices. It supports multiple control methods, including a UART serial communication interface and direct key control, allowing users to choose the most suitable control method according to their needs.

Main Features:

  1. Recording Function: WT2000P supports high-quality voice recording and playback.
  2. UART Interface: Enables data exchange with other microcontrollers via a standard UART protocol, making program control convenient.
  3. Key Control: In addition to software command control, it also supports direct hardware key triggering for specific functions.
  4. Low Power Design: Suitable for battery-powered application scenarios.
  5. Flexible Configuration: In addition to the pins required for basic recording/playback functions, there are two extra programmable I/O pins for user-defined applications, such as status indicators or external sensor inputs.
  6. Built-in Voice Storage: The chip supports multiple built-in voice segments with a large 4 Mbit Flash memory capacity.

Pin Description:

For the ESOP8 package version of WT2000P, the pin assignments are as follows:

  • VCC: Positive power supply
  • GND: Ground
  • VOUT: Internal LDO output of the chip; I/O voltage tolerance is IOVCC
  • P06, P26: Programmable I/O pins, supporting UART, key control, or user-defined functions
  • OUTN, OUTP: Speaker output

Among them, the currently supported functions of P06 and P24 include: key control, UART-controlled playback, start recording, stop recording, and volume configuration.

Application Scenarios:

Substitutability for ISD Series Recording Chips:

Due to its compact design and rich functional features, WT2000P is widely used in consumer electronics, smart home products, educational toys, and many other fields. For example, it can be used in smart speakers for preliminary processing before voice command recognition, or in learning devices to provide interactive voice feedback.

WT2000P is a voice chip produced by Waytronic that supports customizable pin functions. This means users can configure or adjust the functions of certain pins according to their specific requirements to adapt to different application scenarios. This flexibility allows WT2000P to better meet diverse product design needs, enhancing its adaptability and usability in practical applications.

In comparison, although ISD series recording chips are also very popular and widely used due to their simplicity and cost-effectiveness, they may be less flexible than WT2000P in certain aspects. For example, ISD series chips may offer fewer pin configuration options, which limits their applicability in some specific scenarios. Therefore, in terms of compatibility and customizability, WT2000P demonstrates superior performance.

Please note that while some basic information about WT2000P is provided here, during actual project development it is recommended to refer to the latest official datasheets and technical documentation for more accurate and detailed specifications and application guidelines.
