When “Pet Parents” Meet Technology: A Quiet Sensing Revolution Behind a Smart Water Fountain
Modern “pet parents” have long gone beyond simple feeding when it comes to caring for their pets. In the product laboratory of a pet technology company in Fuzhou, a seemingly ordinary pet water fountain is quietly brewing a technological transformation—automatically dispensing water when a pet approaches and stopping when it leaves.
Behind this seemingly simple function lies an intense “battle” with sensor technology.

Amid this wave of intelligence, the company focused on a subtle yet critical pain point:
How can a water fountain “see” a pet?
- ★ Data shows that China’s pet market has surpassed RMB 300 billion in scale, with smart pet products emerging as a new industry growth engine
- ★ From the traditional “one bowl of water for the whole day” to intelligent features such as proximity-activated water flow, water quality monitoring, and scheduled reminders, the evolution of pet water fountains reflects pet owners’ relentless pursuit of scientific pet care
- ★ The booming pet economy has triggered an explosive demand for intelligent pet solutions
01 – Smart Pet Water Fountains: The “Triple Dilemma” of Technology Selection
“At first, we thought infrared ranging would be sufficient,” recalled the product manager of the Fuzhou-based pet technology company.
The team initially selected the WayTronic WT4001A-C01 low-power infrared ranging module. This module had already proven its reliability in applications such as smart toilets and smart door locks. With an ultra-low standby current of 12 μA and a wide detection range of 1–100 cm, it seemed to be a perfect match.

However, the complex internal structure of the pet water fountain quickly exposed a critical issue—the module’s size could not be accommodated within the product’s compact internal layout.
The size constraint was only the beginning. When the team evaluated other infrared module samples, more serious challenges emerged. The operating environment of a pet water fountain turned out to be far more complex than expected.
Factors such as direct sunlight, changing indoor lighting conditions, and heavy water vapor all interfered with the stability of infrared sensors. More importantly, internal structural obstructions and reflections from the water tank caused infrared signals to fail frequently in close-range detection scenarios of 10–20 cm.

This transition—from infrared to radar—was not a simple component replacement, but a fundamental shift in sensing principles.
02 – Microwave Radar Technology: A “Third Eye” That Cuts Through the Fog
The WTL580-C01 microwave radar sensing module recommended by WayTronic opened up a new direction for the customer.
Unlike infrared technology, which relies on reflected light, microwave radar detects targets by transmitting electromagnetic waves and analyzing the returned echoes. This enables it to:
- Penetrate plastic housings
- Remain unaffected by ambient light conditions
- Operate reliably in humid, vapor-filled environments
These characteristics directly addressed every major weakness of infrared sensing in pet water fountain applications.
Key Advantages of the WTL580-C01 in Real Applications
- Up to 50 cm short-range detection, allowing the fountain to anticipate a pet’s approach in advance
- Ultra-low operating current below 18 μA, ensuring long-term operation without noticeable increases in power consumption
- Hidden installation capability, enabling the radar to work entirely inside the housing without surface openings—significantly improving aesthetics and integrated product design
More importantly, the radar module’s sensitivity to distance variation proved to be decisive.
“Even when a cat simply steps into the fountain area, it can be detected immediately,” the product team observed. Traditional motion-based sensing often suffers from delays or missed detections, whereas microwave radar captures subtle distance changes, enabling true presence sensing rather than simple motion triggering.

03 – From Laboratory to Mass Production: Solving the “Last Mile” Problem
Finalizing the technical solution was not the end of the journey.
During real-world testing, the radar module initially exhibited sensing instability—a classic “last mile” challenge in productization. In response, WayTronic’s engineering team proposed a systematic optimization strategy.
Installation Optimization
By working closely with the customer’s structural engineers, the team redesigned the internal mounting position of the module. This avoided signal blockage caused by metal components such as pumps and circuit boards, ensuring a clear and stable signal propagation path.
Parameter Customization and Fine Tuning
The WTL580-C01 supports programmable adjustment of both transmit power (–20 dBm to 1 dBm) and sensitivity. Based on the pet water fountain’s effective sensing requirement within 1 meter, the team precisely constrained the detection range—eliminating false triggers while maintaining fast and accurate responses.
Signal Feedback for Reliability Enhancement
To further improve reliability, a signal feedback mechanism was introduced. By monitoring the module’s operating status in real time, the system can quickly identify abnormal sensing behavior, providing strong support for both large-scale production and after-sales maintenance.

04 – Technology Spillover: From Pet Water Fountains to a Broader Smart Pet Ecosystem
Although the project is still in an optimization phase, the collaboration between the customer and WayTronic has already outlined a broader vision for smart pet products.
Once microwave radar technology is maturely applied to pet water fountains, its spillover effects will extend to a wider range of scenarios:
- Smart litter boxes that detect pet usage and initiate automatic cleaning
- Intelligent feeders that recognize different pets and deliver customized feeding plans
- Pet activity monitoring devices capable of tracking movement patterns and behavioral habits
From infrared to radar, from passive response to active perception, this technological evolution mirrors the intelligent transformation of the entire pet supplies industry. Each sensor upgrade and every parameter optimization represents a concrete step toward the philosophy of precision pet care.
When technology meets genuine affection for pets, a new era of intelligent pet care quietly begins.
